The two main section of the section both covered basic skills of designing from research. What I really learned from the class was going out of basic silhouette. Cutting out from images that I take from V&A outings prevented me from staying on the body. What I mean is by collaging image onto the body, it created bold shapes. To me it came out as new inspiration and new approach to finding ways to design. If I just had to design directly without collaging images, I would have made less dramatic shapes. It gave more volume and bold look to the designs. I’ve enjoyed putting collages in different directions and sizes which gave different silhouettes. Sometimes the picture became the arm and other times it became the whole garment itself. I do think I need more improvements on being more fluent in collecting photographs in different directions is that during the process on collaging them, I can have more interesting outcomes.

During my outing at the V&A I took a look in swords from Asia and putting that into the designs I expected to contain sharpness but looking at the results it was more than that. In some collages the sword was an element that brought curves which gave softness to the mood and in some other collages it acted as what I’ve expected(sharpness and the vibe from the steel which almost looks like an armor). After the class I felt confident that I learned a new technique that I can now use in future design works. Before this session I’ve always tend to start my work directly with pencil but after learning these techniques, it brought much more power and stronger connection between my design and inspiration.
